First day out 145 miles. Not bad for a commencement. Felt a little bilious so declined going in to dinner. Took a little soup in the cabin. Considerable motion to the ship. I feel it very sensibly but trying all I can to ward it off.

Took our departure from New York for San Francisco.
At noon 313 miles from New York. Feel better today although tired. Had a hard day’s work turning over boxes, drawers, trunks, etc. Found all right.
Made very little progress, about 79 miles. In all 400 from N.Y. Sat about an hour on deck this morning. Weather beautiful, afternoon overcast. This evening went on deck to watch the sunset, it was truly magnificent. Have not been able to work on the machine yet, any quantity ready as soon as opportunity serves.
To noon made 150 miles. Amused myself this morn reading tracts, sent some this afternoon to the mariners. This even rather boisterous, men employed taking in sail. First Sunday at sea.
